Fall/Winter 2022 | Vol. 41 | No. 3 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF John Drees MANAGING EDITOR Kim Butterweck from the president Cardinal Community, There’s been plenty to celebrate during the fall 2022 semester on the University of Louisville campuses. For proof, count the number of times we’ve broken out our big red ceremonial scissors since we welcomed students back in August. We’ve cut the ribbon on two residence halls this fall, along with our new Center for Engaged Learning and the beautiful 2020 Pavilion. What makes these developments so exciting for our university community is that all of these venues were created with student success in mind. Upgrading our university housing has been a recognized need on our Belknap Campus for years. This fall, we opened the second of two new halls in the heart of campus, replacing antiquated facilities that had outlived their usefulness. Those facilities were recently christened Belknap Village North and Belknap Village South, and they represent the best in student housing in a location that is extraordinarily convenient to their residents. This semester also saw a ribbon-cutting at the new Denny Crum Hall, a 128-bed facility along South Floyd Street that houses student-athletes and members of our sport administration program. This wonderful event was highlighted by an appearance from the legendary coach and university ambassador for whom the building is named. I know this dedication was an inspiring time for both our current and former basketball players, many of whom were in attendance that day. For the first time in a long time, this semester felt “normal” for our campus community. COVID finally loosened its grip on our society, and students, faculty and staff once again were comfortable getting together to study, socialize and network. The university also fulfilled a promise to commemorate what was lost during the pandemic with the introduction of the 2020 Pavilion near the Belknap Academic Building and Lutz Hall. The pavilion recognizes the Class of 2020, which lost its in-person commencement due to the coronavirus pandemic. It celebrates the strength, commitment and resilience of the class and provides a space for reflection and relaxation. I think we all feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when we see our current students enjoying the space on a sunny afternoon. That’s been a common sight this fall. Our mission as a university is more than just ensuring our students complete their classwork and earn their degrees. We also are charged with preparing them for life in the “real world” after college. That’s why we opened our Center for Engaged Learning, which works with campus, community and industry partners to provide experiential learning opportunities that prepare undergraduate students for academic and career success. The center is an outgrowth of our strategic plan and another example of how UofL is a great place to learn. We truly are proud of the accomplishments of the university community over the past year. We also fully understand that we owe so much of our success to your ongoing support. I hope 2022 has been a good year for you and your loved ones, and I wish you all the best for the coming New Year. Thanks for all you do, and Go Cards!
