THE SHB INTERVIEW of our products, to what markets we should be targeting to prevent any kind of overbuilding. Many players out there are doing a really good job of improving in their businesses. And we’re focused on that at ACC — continuing to make technological advancements and improvements, particularly with understanding and interpreting the data and ensuring that it translates into the right technology to provide a better experience for our residents and our teams. SHB : What’s one thing that you’ve discovered or learned about the space that surprised you or that you were not expecting? Palleschi : I’m pleasantly surprised by the com-mitment to the resident experience, across the industry. I think everybody really wants to do a good job and everyone seems to be helping each other. People used to associate our business with the older dorms on campus, but that’s not the case anymore. Everybody wants to stand out and ensure that the resident experience they’re pro-viding is in line with current trends. The industry is also concerned about taking care of those resi-dents. Mental health continues to be a growing concern across the country — particularly with about college students. Our team at ACC and American Campus Communities (ACC) is underway on the development of a $631 million student housing project at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
