Toothpick Hunt

There’s a picture of a toothpick (a line pointed at both ends) hidden somewhere in every issue. One lucky family who finds the toothpick will get a prize!

To enter this issue’s Toothpick Hunt, search out the hidden toothpick. Send a card, note, or email telling us what page it is on. Please, be sure to include your name, address, phone (for UPS), and email with your entry. Send in your entry by January 15, 2025, and yours might win. Only one entry per family, please!

The winner of the toothpick hunt for PHS #159 was Carol Tortorella, Orlando, FL. Carol was sent a copy of The Good Land: Farm Families Remember. She were chosen from the subscribers who found the toothpick on page 28.

This issue’s toothpick prize is the Optical Illusions Lab.

When you open up this very fancy kit—which is no longer available elsewhere, by the way—you’ll find a colorfully illustrated 32-page manual filled with more than 50 exciting illusions . . .

and the science behind them. The handy carrying case also includes tons of fun ingredients for creating the illusions.

Create amazing moving pictures, uncover stunning 3-D images, and trick yourself into seeing shapes and colors that don’t exist!

Contest Winners

In issue #159, we asked our young readers to tell us about a visit to the zoo.

The PHS #159 story contest winner was Etienna Ochoa, age 10, Hammond, IN. She won a copy of DK’s Mind Benders.

We are quite happy to acknowledge a number of other excellent entries. Congratulation to the following Honorable Mention recipients: Michael Parry, age 7, Falls, PA; Michael Zambon, age 12, Grand Rapids, MI; Ezra (8) and Faith (6) Davis, Montpelier, VA; and Aparna (11) and Otri (11) Mukherjee, Vancouver, WA.

Some of their stories can be seen on the opposite page.

New Story Contest for Kids

Tell us about your visit to a library. This can be a library visit that really happened, or an imaginary visit to a library that no longer exists (e.g., the famous Library of Alexandria, which burned down a few thousand years ago) or one that never existed (for example, the Library of Schoolwork the Dog Ate, which mysteriously holds all the missing assignments every kid ever wrote).

You can invent your own library, no matter how kooky. The Library of Socks? The Board Game Library (oops, that one actually exists, in Albuquerque, NM!). Any real or fictional library is OK.

Your entry must be 50 to 300 words long, must be your original work, and must not have been submitted or published elsewhere. Please, be sure to include your name, address, phone, and age with your entry. Entries can be submitted in the body of an email (see the “How to Enter” box below). PLEASE include full name, age, and contact info (so we can send the prize if you win) in that same email. Thanks!

Send your entry to us by January 15, 2025. The best story writer will receive the Flight Test Lab: Hovercrafts kit pictured above.

This reclosable kit includes mix-and-match parts to create four different hovercrafts, as well as a 32-page illustrated book that explains the science and technology of hovercraft flight. Fun!

All entries become the property of Practical Homeschooling and may be published online or in any other materials we publish or create.

Our contests are open only to paid subscribers. So if you are not currently a subscriber, why not include a subscription order along with your contest entry?
