How old should our children be before we start homeschooling?

Perhaps a better question would be, “Since we already started homeschooling our children at birth, why not continue?”

Welcome, Parents of Toddlers & Preschoolers!

You are already teaching your little ones to talk, eat with some semblance of table manners, and use the toilet.

Now is the perfect time to start prepping for academic homeschool!

A couple years of reading Practical Homeschooling will make you feel confident and prepared for all their future academics—even if you don’t end up homeschooling after all.

You’ll find help and ideas for working with your young child right now, in every issue’s Preschool column. See page 12 for a fresh look at those books your children ask you to read again . . . and again . . . and again!

You will also be armed with answers for tricky problems, such as, “What if my child doesn’t want to read?” before they emerge. (See the article on page 15.)

In addition you will have read dozens of how-to articles on all academic subjects, including the latest tips and tricks.

For instance, the “Information Skills” article on page 30 comes complete with a handy Library Skills checklist.

You’ll have seen reviews of major curricula and resources, as well as our annual Reader Awards and i-Learn awards, so you’ll be well educated in top curriculum choices.

Inspirational articles, such as the “Show & Tell” on page 44, will give you ideas for what your child can accomplish— even at a young age. And you’ll know all your important legal rights as a homeschooler, thanks to attorney Antony Kolenc’s helpful columns (this

The same applies to parents of middlers:

be sure to read the high school and college prep columns, to get ready for what comes next.

It’s an ongoing homeschool education that only costs about 5 cents a day, as well as an almost free homeschool library, if you save our back issues!

Spring Is Coming

Speaking of what comes next. . . .

This issue you’re holding is our Winter issue. Yes. It’s also our “mid-school-year” issue. Now is the time to assess and consider if you want to make any curriculum or other changes before the New Year is upon us.

You’ll find some great options among the ads in this issue. Please let them know you heard about them in Practical Homeschooling!

What Is Your Favorite Curriculum?

We depend on you, our readers, to nominate new curriculum, as well as old classics, so everyone can rank their favorites. The results of the final ballot are printed in our Summer and Fall issues.

But there is no ballot without your nominations!

Please take a minute and fill out the nomination ballots on pages 45 and 46. To show our appreciation for your help, one of you will win an Ultimate Geography Bundle prize!

Enter Our Contests

Want to claw back the cost of your Practical Homeschooling subscription?

Get your kids to enter our contests! You’ll find them on pages 4 and 5. The prize value usually is more than our subscription cost.

I’ve noticed that once a child wins our Toothpick or Story contest, they tend to enter again and again, since now they believe they can win.

So why not sit down your children, hand them the issue, and see if they find the toothpick?

While you’re at it, give them the Story Content prompt and send us their stories. We read and appreciate every single one. Even if they don’t win the prize, they might get Honorable Mention and become a “published author”!

Write for Us!

We are always looking for in-depth articles on helpful topics.

So if you have special knowledge of a topic important to homeschoolers, go to home-school.com/writers and submit your article pitch.

We also enjoy sharing “Day at Our House” articles, where you write down and share what happens in your home-school day. No need to send a pitch for that: just email it directly, or PM us on our Facebook page.

I’d love to hear from you!
