DEVOTION TO CUSTOMER SERVICE LEADS TO MERGER: CLARK PEST CONTROL PURCHASES XCEL PEST CONTROL IN CALIFORNIA
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses suffered. Wyatt Dursteler saw the same problems many other business owners experienced at his own business, Xcel Pest Control in Beaumont, Calif. Burnout was rampant; Dusrteler was struggling to find quality workers; and he felt his time with his family was being impacted by the stress of trying to keep up.
One of Dursteler’s friends, a branch manager for Clark Pest Control, suggested selling Xcel to Clark and its parent company, Rollins Inc. — which has more than 900 locations and more than 2 million customers worldwide. Clark has nearly 30 locations in California and one office in Nevada
“I didn’t think of selling before my friend suggested it,” Dursteler says. “I thought I’d have my company forever, but I felt like I needed a change.”

The merger was finalized in February, and Rollins put Dursteler in charge of an underperforming branch in San Diego, Calif. He says it’s been a growing experience.
“It’s a challenge, and I enjoy challenges,” he adds. “At Rollins, I have an awesome supervisor team around me, which I never had as a small business owner. Before, everything stopped with me, so it’s nice to have a management team with which I can collaborate.”
“They have more opportunities to grow at Rollins because it’s a huge company, and there are more chances for advancement.” – Wyatt Dursteler
SEALING THE DEAL
It was no surprise, then, that Dursteler chose to work with Rollins, after meeting the team several times.
“After sitting down with them, I was confident we were a good fit,” Dursteler says. “How we do service was very similar. I knew they were doing it the right way. That was very important to me.”
Clark transferred Dursteler’s Xcel staff to its Riverside office, where they continue to serve former Xcel customers.
“They have more opportunities to grow at Rollins because it’s a huge company, and there are more chances for advancement,” Dursteler says.
Dursteler says no transition like this is perfect, but he and the Rollins team have ironed out the rough spots. For anyone considering selling their small pest management business to a larger firm, he has some simple, straightforward advice: “Find a company with your core values.”
